MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) Workshop and MARPE Complications (What to Do and What Not to Do)

SPEAKER: Dr Audrey Yoon

In this lecture and workshop, Dr Yoon will review the biomechanical advantages and disadvantages of each MARPE design and technique from A to Z. She will also present cases that demonstrate the complications of MARPE and how to troubleshoot and manage each complication.

She will discuss her clinical data (in press) of MARPE complications including a review of over 400 plus MARPE cases, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) x-ray objective measurements to determine what factors lead to successful clinical improvements, and what factors may create adverse iatrogenic consequences of MARPE.

The goals of this presentation are to guide the orthodontist in selecting the best MARPE option for individual cases and proper treatment plan and biomechanics to avoid clinical complications.

Dentist’s Role for Children with Sleep Disordered Breathing

SPEAKER: Dr Audrey Yoon

Synopsis : Most current dental treatments for children with sleep disordered breathing have focused on maxillary expansion. However, we have not quite yet understood the mechanisms of how anatomical changes affect the orofacial functions and the pathophysiology of sleep-disordered breathing. Dr. Yoon will show her extensive research for a better understanding of the relationship between anatomical factors and the physiology of sleep-disordered breathing. She will discuss the early identification of the ethology and understanding the pathophysiology to prevent diseases. She will also discuss the orthodontic approach for modifying orofacial growth and development with the newest technique to achieve ideal skeletal structures and to reprogram orofacial muscle functions. She will present how to incorporate airway and sleep into everyday practice.
